In the case of Gerry Lopez, the man definitely made the break. I stood on the beach at Eukai Beach Park (Pipeline) in 1972 behind 300 feet of telephoto lenses on tripods, and watched Lopez destroy triple-overhead Pipe with grace in the barrel like I've never seen since. What a memory!
